Did your lawn last fall leave you underwhelmed? If you didn’t aerate and overseed in the fall, then it is definitely something to consider for the Spring.

What is Aeration?

Aeration is the process of putting holes into your lawn to allow air, water, and vital nutrients available at the top of the lawn to penetrate the grassroots and improve itshealth. Aeration helps to break up the thatch, allowing for better growth and a healthier lawn that is green and lush.  A

What Is Thatch?

That is the layer under your new grass. It is comprised of dead grass, old roots, and decomposing plants that build up season after season. It is important to have some thatch because it is important for the health of the grass above, however, when it becomes too thick and compacted it has the opposite effect on your grass, it makes is sicker. A thick thatch equals less light, water, and nutrients reaching the soil and root system below causing your grass to become thinner and/or die.  When we aerate the thatch, it brings your lawn back to a thriving state. The process of aeration allow keeps the thatch decomposing at an appropriate rate keeping it from building up for a while. Regular aeration can keep your lawn thriving year after year.

What is Overseeding?

Overseeding is quite literally, putting new grass seed on top of existing grass. Whether you are trying to fill in a base spot, thicken your turf overall or increase it’s durability, overseeding can help. We typically recommend overseeding after aeration so that new grass seed can get down into the soil layer as well and help increase the health of your lawn. We recommend spreading multiple varieties of grass seed across your lawn to make it more resilient against stress, disease, and drought.

Recap: Overseeding and Aeration, The Perfect Combination

Overseeding and aeration are the perfect combination. When you aerate and then overseed, you help break up the thatch and then introduce new seeds to grow and thicken the lawn itself. Aeration allows for water, air, and nutrients to speed up healthy grass growth and restore your lawn to the perfect seed-to-soil ratio for the best grass growth. When the new grass seed is introduced to the soil direction – falling into the aerated holes, it will develop deeper roots creating a healthier lawn. By utilizing both of these applications simultaneously, your lawn is sure to become luscious, beautiful, and healthy once again.
