Landscape planning can often take several weeks and revisions to complete depending on the complexity of the project. This means that Winter is the perfect time to start thinking about your landscape plan so you are ready to move on to installing the chosen plan in the Spring.

While it might seem simple, there are dozens of choices that need be made when designing your landscape. Here are some examples of things to think about during the design process for different landscaping elements.

Deck:

Are we replacing or adding on to an existing deck or starting from scratch?

Are any parts of the current deck salvageable?

What type of deck boards do you want to use?

Does the deck need a railing?

What material do you want to railing to be made of?

What color stain do you want the deck to have if it is wooden?

If your deck off the first story or second story of your home?

Does your deck need stairs?

Does your deck need a gate?

How many levels will your deck be?

What is the area of each deck level?

Does your deck need to be built around anything? Ex: hot tub, pool, tree?

Patios:

Are we replacing, adding onto, or installing a new patio?

What size of patio are you wanting, based on your plans for the space?

What material do you want the patio to be created from?

Does the patio need a retaining wall added to it for grade purposes?

What is the location of the anticipated patio?

Does the patio need a place for a fire pit built in?

Can you have a firepit in your city?

What shape do you want the patio to be?

Would a walkway enhance this project and add value?

Do you want a pathway from the patio to the front yard?

Would you like to add a seat wall, lighting, or water feature?

What color should the materials be?

Raised Garden Bed:

What is the area of the garden bed?

Where will the garden bed be located?

What will you be planted in the garden bed?

What material(s) do you want the garden bed built from?

What color should those materials be?

How tall do you want the garden bed to be?

What shape do you want the garden bed to be?

Retaining Wall:

What is the width and height of the retaining wall?

What material do you want the retaining wall to be made from?

What access do we have to the work area?

Is there an existing retaining wall that we are replacing?

Do you want to carry the same materials into a raised garden bed or garden border?

What drainage requirements do we have for the area where the retaining wall is located?

This is just a partial list of the questions/choices that need be be answered/made prior to installation of a landscape design.
